Helenor Rutabaga
I came across this type of rutabaga in the Basque region of the Pyrenees foothills of southwest France, where it is used in their classic Garbure (or Baratzekari Salda), a hearty winter soup. I had to have it! I’ve grown this rutabaga for several years. It always germinates well and fast. It isn’t picky and forms into a large healthy plant with a large bulb that sits in the ground all winter, in rain and snow (I do mulch it with leaves or straw). I pull it all winter and into the spring when it starts to bolt. It stays tender and never gets woody. Plus if you need to pull several they will last in the fridge for weeks. One of my favourite winter garden crops; great for soups and stews or simply mashed with butter, salt and pepper.

vigorous growth
good germination, manages downpours. definitely benefits from being next to plants that attract parasitic wasps.
