Astaxanthin belongs to the carotenoid family. Carotenoids are secondary plant substances that form a broad class of natural color pigments. Astaxanthin, the red pigment, is produced as a metabolic product of photosynthesis in algae, plankton, and also in some bacteria and fungi, where it protects against oxidative damage caused by light.
