Magnus Carlsen learned endgames from a Karsten Muller book. If I could only persuade the adults of my chess club to work their way through "Chess Endgames for KIds" we would have a much stronger club. Also great for coaching juniors -and adults who still want to improve- is John Nunn's excellent "Chess Endgame Workbook " in the same "For KIds" series. Both these mathematician-chessplayer GM's have the gift of explaining endgames so clearly that you remember the essential ideas.
