Karsten Muller and John Nunn- all you need for endgames!
Magnus Carlsen learned endgames from a Karsten Muller book. If I could only persuade the adults of my chess club to work their way through "Chess Endgames for KIds" we would have a much stronger club. Also great for coaching juniors -and adults who still want to improve- is John Nunn's excellent "Chess Endgame Workbook " in the same "For KIds" series. Both these mathematician-chessplayer GM's have the gift of explaining endgames so clearly that you remember the essential ideas. Remember Karpov's answer (before any of our players gained a GM title) to the question " How can we get some British Grandmasters?": "I think you very much study openings-?" ("Yes, maestro, we buy a lot of books on openings.") "NO! NO! -ENDGAMES! ENDGAMES"
