What is it?

I graduated from Michigan State University with a history degree and the man on this T-shirt is by far the most vexing historical artifact I’ve ever encountered. Who is he? Where is he going? Where can I buy a hat like his? These are questions for which there are no answers. That is why it is my favorite shirt I’ve ever owned.
