Shiitake Mushroom Plugs
If you want to grow mushrooms without a lot of work, buy the shiitake kit. But if you’re into the process as much as the results, then plugs are for you. First you have to find an oak tree around 6” in diameter—easily done in the woods around our property—and cut it into 3' or 4’ lengths. Then drill 1” deep holes with a 5/16” bit and gently pound the plugs into them. Finally, paint the tops of the plugs—recessed just below the surface of the logs—with melted beeswax. After finding a likely spot on the north side of the house, lay them out so they’re not touching the ground—and wait. And wait. And wait. Put another way, I’ll be back to finish this review in 12-18 months.
