I had them installed a few weeks ago. My D string peg has already quit working. As soon as you start winding it up, it unwinds. I haven’t even made my last payment. The biggest part that bothers me the most is that I just started playing.

A second review of the Wittner Geared pegs
I have now installed the Wittner Geared pegs in seventeen violins and two violas. IMO all currently made violins and violas should come equipped with geared pegs. Guitar players couldn't live without them, why should violinists suffer with classical pegs. The Wittner geared pegs are easy to install and allow removal of fine tuners from the tailpiece. You will need a 1:30 peg hole reamer to do it yourself. If shy, have The Fiddlershop do the installation for you. You will never look back. The Wittner pegs can be installed without using glue, but I found that the glueless installation method has them sometimes slip due to wide temperature and humidity swings. I now use Gorilla glue on all my Wittner peg installations. I have never had a Wittner geared peg fail. There are a number of advantages using the Wittner pegs instead of suffering with classical pegs. New violinists will find tuning much easier and the 8:1 gear ratio minimizes breaking strings. Teachers will appreciate the ability of the student to easily tune without needing assistance. Also, there will be no need for peg drops, and slipping pegs will be a thing of the past. The Perfection geared pegs are good, but I prefer the higher gear ratio and simplicity of installation of the Wittner geared pegs. I think that Fiddlershop should up-front offer the addition of Wittner geared pegs option on all student instruments.

I'll never go back to solid pegs
Very smooth operation. Unless you are very handy, I would suggest having a professional installation. If you have a cheap violin to experiment on then go for it before you mess up your good fiddle! I'm very happy with my work. It only took me about four hours, lol. I could do it now in about an hour. The pegs are a pleasure.
