No visible hallmark, so why pay extra for sterling?!

I paid double for sterling, and it should have a visible hallmark so denoting. I only see a slight depression on the back, near the chain-hole, filled with what might be numerals, but my 8 power magnifying glass isn't nearly enough to make out anything as to what is there. It would take a laboratory grade microscope to see what is in that sand-grain sized depression. I wish I'd just gotten pewter, since the recipient of this gift would be skeptical w/o the hallmark sterling should have, and I will not even claim to them it is, lest they look at me askew, with everyone knowing real sterling is hallmarked.
