Hi Peter: I didn't respond right away because I still had a bit of the Pelikan Brilliant Black that I wanted to use up. Between the two, I find the Pelikan is actually blacker than the Perle Noir, but it doesn't flow as easily from the pen, and it's very wet--it takes a long time to dry. The Perle Noir has a grey tinge and it shades beautifully on the paper. It flows more easily from the pen and it doesn't take as long to dry. (The pen I use is a Parker Sonnet.) If all you want is to have the blackest of black inks, then I'd recommend the Pelikan. But if you want a black ink that's a joy to write with and looks intriguing on the page, then the Perle Noir is what I'd recommend. And by the way, here's a book I would recommend, in case you don't already know about it: Michel Pastoureau, Black: The History of a Color.
