Very thorough coverage of submissions from side control top
This instructional has a central theme of killing the opponent’s near side arm (KNSA) just before commencing a submission or a transitioning to a better position from the side control top position. In volume 1 (25 minutes long) Ante spends the first half of the volume teaching the main points of control and maintenance of the side control top position, with most of the remaining time of this volume teaching a series of techniques to kill the near side arm. Ante states that the near side arm is the key to the opponent’s ability to stall, defend and launch counters from side control bottom and hence the reason why this arm needs to be neutralised just prior to commencing a submission or a transition. The following three volumes (totalling 1 hour and 43 minutes) are primarily used to teach side control submissions and transitions. Some of the submission techniques are taught from a failed submission attempt using a different technique. Also, within Volume 4 Ante teaches several counters to frustrate your opponent’s attempts to escape side control bottom and addresses what you should do if you are unable to kill the near side arm. In total the instructional has 44 chapters. The submissions taught include various versions of the armbar, americana, arm triangle, ezekiel choke, darce, wrist lock, armlock, triangle choke, kimura, north-south choke, paper cutter choke and reverse arm triangle. Ante is an experienced, knowledgeable and confident instructor. He has produced a range of BJJ instructionals. Ante teaches in a relaxed and engaging manner. His instruction and demonstration of the techniques in this instructional are clear and easy to understand. The techniques are repeated several times from different angles. In my opinion the techniques taught in this instructional are practical, efficient and importantly not complicated to learn and importantly recall. The only question I would have is that in teaching ways to neutralise the opponent’s near side arm, no techniques are taught that pin his arm to the mat using your legs, but perhaps Ante does not favour these techniques. Sound and picture quality is good. The angles of the technique displayed are appropriate. In summary, I think that if you want to improve your control of an opponent pinned in side control and also expand the range of practical submission techniques that you know from side control top, then this is a good instructional to purchase.
