Textured Dishcloth Crochet Pattern

Im a fairly good crocheter, I think but I could not get this pattern

I couldn't get this pattern to work. I couldn't tell which stitches I was supposed to skip and which stitches I was supposed to hdc into. By the time I was on row 4 I only had 20 stitches to work with. *sad face emoji*
