CajonTabs are Amazing!
A long overdue review! This 10" CajonTab is actually my third cajon from Louson Drums. Before buying my first I was lugging a standard cajon to performances. Though I enjoyed the deep tones of the drum (a Pearl Boom Box), I was getting tired of lugging the bigger, more awkward drum around, tired of the hard seat when sitting on the drum during longer performances, and tired of the back strain from bending over to reach the lower deep tones of the drum while playing. Somehow some of Louson's advertising made its way to my social media, and I was instantly intrigued. A cajon I could wear like a guitar while standing and was significantly smaller than a standard cajon? I watched some videos on YouTube from some other drummers who picked one up, and it was enough for me to pull the trigger on my first CajonTab. My first was a 12" Pro Series Mahogany (far right in photos). The drum produces some nice warm tones. Recently I came back to Louson's website and saw the Purple Heart CajonTabs, and not only is the color striking, but Purple Heart is one of the more harder woods on the Janka scale, which I figured would add to the durability for a drum I'd haul to performances. I picked up a 12" Pro Series (far left in the photos), and shortly after picked up this 10" Pro Series (middle drum in the photos) just for added diversity to the tones I can bring to the band I play in. The shallower chamber of a CajonTab reduces some of that deep bass tone you get from a standard cajon, but a willing sacrifice for ease of playing and better portability! The snare attachment works surprisingly well. When engaged you get that nice crisp snare sound. It sounds like the snares are built inside the chamber like a typical cajon (no difference that I can tell), but the ability to remove the snares at anytime is a great feature! The porthole changes the dynamic of the tone, but I typically play the drum with the porthole fully open. The 10" CajonTab produces a higher, tighter sound that reminds me more of a marching snare - great for faster paced upbeat songs. When I bought my first CajonTab, I even researched ways I could mike the drum, and found out about the Cling On pickup. I have two pickups now, and with a two port acoustical amp with an XLR connection in the back, I can plug two drums right into the amp, and send the signal directly into the sound system with an XLR cable (eliminating the need to stick a mike in front of the amp, and risk picking up other instruments in the band). The sound of the CajonTab in the main sound system is just amazing! Highly, HIGHLY recommend CajonTab! Great work Louson!
