An Unkindness of Ghosts (Paperback) by Rivers Solomon

Creative and Immersive!

This book is what I imagine what floating in deep space would be like- calm and mystic, but holding infinite terrors beneath the great expanse of darkness. The world building in this book is incredible, unique and intriguing, at the same time parallels the injustice that exists in our reality. The main characters Aster is trying to survive the injustices she faces daily, while trying to piece together the mystery of her mother’s death and what that may mean for her future. This book explores racism and gender within the confines of a society that makes a literally split into different levels based on skin tones. This book is powerful and heavy, the ending is left slightly optimistic, but the horror of the previous events overpower the somewhat uplifting ending. I’m glad I read this book, but I will definitely need to read something lighter after. There is a heaviness that stays with you when you reach the end of this story, but that is how you know there is a terrifying strength to this story. Read this book if you love detailed world building, unique Sci-Fi tales, and are ready to wrestle with the issues we face in our world that Aster faces in the book.

Arrived quickly

The book arrived quickly and in good shape, but I'm hoarding my fiction books to read on vacation in July. I look forward to sitting down, putting my feet up, and reading it!
