The pencil strapped to the outside of the spine is an inspired design decision, IMHO. Others will decry having the fine graphite pencil tip exposed. The pages, themselves, are heavy 8-1/2 x 5, unlined, perfect for notes, sketching, and bad poetry. A heavy elastic strap keeps the notebook securely closed while riding around your purse or backpack / other. I find that all of the Blackwing products are thoughtfully made, well designed, and durable.
