Mopar 68170214AB Dodge Ram Six Bolt Steering Box
Jacob · May 24, 2026
Solid steering
This box replaced the stock unit in my 07 Dodge Ram 2500, 6" lift on 34" tires. The original box's sector shaft sheared in half in 2024. Steering was always sloppy and it was just considered "typical Dodge steering". You could move the steering wheel plus or minus 10° and still be driving straight ahead. In fact that oscillation was pretty normal driving down the highway. My truck now drives like every other truck on the road. The steering is very tight. On the installation, one recommendation I'd have is to remove the original gearbox with the hoses attached. That is disconnect the hoses from the distant ends, remove the steering box, note the hose orientation, transfer the hoses to the new gearbox, and torque to spec. It's almost impossible to attach, let alone torque, the hoses to the new steering box after it's installed. Finally, having a much tighter gearbox caused my truck to have death wobble. Having a bud turn my steering wheel while I watched for slop underneath let me find the problems. In my case, I replaced the drag link and the track bar, both which had about 0.25" of slop, and that cured the problem. The truck runs like a champ and steers better than it ever has. I also have an '08 with fewer miles and I will probably preemptively change it before it fails.
