This targeted training, as well as “Road to Riffsville”, are excellent resources to start improving your improvisation abilities with a memorized deck. He includes several great tricks here and at least one that is “jazzable” but has a safety net. He also pointed out a wonderful trick in Mnemonica which I had overlooked. When it comes to riffing, you ultimately have to just go for it. These resources give you some great options to make those first attempts less scary.
