Excellent book. I’m looking at color in a new, more effective way. Choosing my limited palette to reflect the mood I want the viewer to feel is a snap, and is making my painting process much easier. If you’re new to painting, spend the money on this book and do every exercise. Even if you’re a seasoned painter, John presents color theory in a way nobody else does, and you’ll love it.

Game changer.
As a person who did not attend college art courses where color theory is explained in depth, this book is a game changer.Ive purchased many books on color theory and this is ,hands down , THE one that explains theory so well.

Painstaking drudgery that will revolutionize
This book as well as his two DVD's on "Limited palette, Unlimited color" are back breaking ordeals in color mixing in total contrast to "direct" or alla prima painting.
I highly recommend both the book and the DVDs because it will take you to next level. But...it's not for the faint of heart. Just to go through mixing 9 shades of grey and attempting to paint an entire painting in monochrome (grissaille) is to finally, personally understand the classical saying that value creates the mood and adding color in the same value on top of that enhances the effect.
