The Yard Carpenters — Carpenter Trouser Sewing Pattern

I wanted to like this pattern because the style is great and the finished trousers look good in the video. Unfortunately, I found the pattern and instructions inconsistent enough that I can’t recommend it without significant experience. The biggest issue was the seam allowances. The website, written instructions, videos, and direct messages from the creator all seemed to give different guidance. I spent a lot of time trying to determine which edges already included seam allowance and which required extra. This led to unnecessary confusion and affected the fit. After making a full calico prototype and carefully comparing it to a well-fitting pair of carpenter jeans, I found the finished trousers to be noticeably too small through the waist and hips, with a short back rise. The back yoke is also much taller than typical carpenter pants, which places the back pockets unusually low. The videos are enjoyable to watch and the overall construction methods are good, but the drafting and documentation need another round of refinement. An updated instruction booklet with clear seam allowance diagrams and a review of the sizing would make a huge difference. I ended up with a wearable pair, but it required much more measuring, troubleshooting, and pattern analysis than any commercial pattern I’ve used.

Many patterns have a hundred different lines for different sizes. This one was very clear, even on the pockets. Love the overall fit, easy to follow instructions. Love it!

The patterns were clear and printed on a proper paper also offering options for the pockets. I found the videos on youtube very useful and clear, so it was quite easy to sew the trousers. The trousers are the most convenient and at the same time also good looking trousers I have ever had. I made them of 410g/m2 twill. Because I have aleady a couple pairs of carpenter trousers I left the carpenter pocket and the hammer loop off but I did sew all the topstitchings which gave me an opportunity to learn how to topstitch both outer and inner leg seams, which wasn't as complicated as I thought. I can warmly recommend these trousers to anyone who wants to have reliable, longlasting and comfortable trousers.
