Great for preventing cold water shock
Covers the back of the neck and ears when entering cold water, seems to do a good job of preventing cold water getting in there and giving you immersion shock. Wouldn't feel the need to wear earplugs under this, there is a great deal.

Great for winter paddling
This hood is excellent for cold weather and winter paddling. It fits well under my helmet and keeps my head warm from cold air and wind, especially after I've fallen off my SUP and taken a swim.
