Side Rebate/Rabbet Plane Pair with a Dovetail Fence

I bought the pair of planes with a 7:1 dovetail fence just over a year ago. I have used them extensively to true up a hundred or so sliding dovetails, with some up to 5ft long. I've used them in oak, mahogany and cherry and chestnut. They're easy to sharpen by hand and cut cleanly even accross the grain. The fence is very acurate and perfectly fitted to both planes using a very clever mechanism to keep it solidly in place. I now consider these planes to be an essential tool for any large joinery projects and I find myself using far more sliding dovetails than I have in the past. I've since bought an additional 90° fence so I can put away my old 98/99 side rebate planes for good.

Just Amazing

I've just flown home and opened the package to find these beautiful things. I'm now busy moving house so I haven't put them to work but I wanted to share some thoughts and details. Firstly the packaging was first rate. Inside the package are sturdy cardboard boxes with the planes wrapped in bubble wrap and then placed in a zip lock bag, with packing beans filling any empty space. The zip lock bag was unexpected but I immediately realised it would restrict any moisture changes in the wood. Brilliant! Secondly the level of craftsmanship is amazing. The fit and finish unsurpassed. For example: • The fitment between wood and brass is perfect. Running a finger nail across the join and I can feel the texture change but no lip at all in either direction. • Every edge that is held is deburred and chamfered, just holding it is wonderful. • The dovetail fence is so well thought out. It is held in its own brass dovetail slot. This does two things. Firstly the fence alignment is accurate and repeatable. Tighten the the thumb screw and the two surfaces mate together and self align. The fence is always parallel to the sole. Secondly this holds the fence tight but a whisker off the brass sole. Meaning your reference surface doesn't get marked by the fence or vise versa. This is the opposite to most planes where the thumbscrew tightens the fence to the sole and marks your reference surface
