Quietly Punching Above Its Weight

I was lucky enough to get the Kiwame Tokyo KUBO Sakura during its first launch, and having spent some time with it, this might be my favourite piece from the brand so far. I own watches from both Kiwame’s Mune and Iwao series, but the KUBO Sakura has a very different personality. It is the quiet one in the room. Classy, understated, and not trying too hard to impress. The star, of course, is the pink Sakura lacquer dial. There is something about the shade that photographs simply cannot capture. Depending on the light, it shifts in tone and depth, sometimes soft and subtle, sometimes surprisingly vivid. The recessed small-seconds dial adds just enough character without disturbing the simplicity of the overall design. Look closely at that subdial and there is another lovely detail: it is shaped like a Sakura flower. It is the kind of touch you may not notice immediately, but once you do, it becomes part of the watch’s charm. Inside is the Miyota 82S5. It is not a movement designed to win bragging rights, but that almost suits the philosophy of this watch. It gets on with the jobs . At 37mm, the proportions are spot on.Overall it quietly punching above its weight. Japan’s microbrand and independent watch scene is on fire right now. With watches like the KUBO Sakura, the hardest part is no longer deciding which one to buy.It’s actually managing to buy one before everyone else does :)
