Monteux's Dvorak 7 is one of his very finest recordings, and should probably be a bit more celebrated than it is. Other conductors may perhaps have tightened the screws slightly more in the climax of the first movement, but on the whole, this version is as satisying as any. It is certainly beautifully played and recorded, and never sounded half so good on CD. The Kertesz performance of the overture is not on the same level, as either a work or a performance, but it's a nice bonus. A fabulous issue.

And you thought Monteux was a reserved conductor!
CI had this performance on an LP long ago. The recording sounded a bit murky, and I eventually discarded it. Years later, I discovered the Szell -Cleveland performance, and better sitll, the Dohnanyi--Clevleand, in excellent sound and a little more flexible than Szell's. But since I'd always loved Monteux, I gave the HΩTT reissue a go. It is white-hot, just as intense as Dohnanyi,'s reading but with more give and lilt in the lyrical passages.. The sound is at least as good as Dohnanyi's digital. The bonus of Istvan Kertesz's recording of "My Country" is also excellent. Deeply satisfying in all respects.

Dvorak Symphony No 7 Pierre Monteux LSO
Absolutely wonderful recording! Am enjoying all the recordings I've downloaded in DSD & DXD. I didn't know the sound could be that good.
