It's a good concept for outdoor writing, unaffected by cold conditions or moisture. I find that the type of pencil you use makes a difference - a standard HB lead is a bit light on the surface, but a B lead is darker and bolder. The surface does seem to get better the more you write, rub it clean, and write again.
