Kanthal wire is a high-resistance iron-chromium-aluminum (FeCrAl) alloy used as a heating element in kilns; scientifically, it works by resistive (Joule) heating, where electrical energy passing through the wire is converted into heat due to its high electrical resistance, while the aluminum in the alloy forms a protective alumina (Al₂O₃) oxide layer on the surface that prevents further oxidation and allows it to maintain strength at temperatures up to ~1400 °C (2550 °F).
