These globes are amazing! The carbon-enhanced xenon globe sometimes needs a bit of rolling around or tapping on (the glass is very strong) to free some of the soot to enter the plasma, but once that happens the effect is remarkable -- a stable white plasma torus with orange sparks drifting around and sometimes organizing together like constellations of stars. Do beware that as the seller warns, the glass for this globe does get very hot very quickly, so be careful and never leave it running unattended. The other globes like neon does not get nearly as hot. This company's been a joy to order from and I've enjoyed all of their products so far.

This is actually really cool once you know how to use it. First it doesn't just glow red unless the metal salts interact with the plasma. You need to interact with the sphere, turn it, and tap it, so that that salts fall into the plasma ring. You will need keep doing it to see the reaction, but with the right conditions and taps, you can see some really cool things. From my experience, you need to turn the knob enough to form the plasma ring and then a tiny bit more, or maybe less. The ring should be mostly stable and there should be a slight green glow that you can't quite pinpoint the source of. If the ring gets thin and starts going crazy with the sphere losing the green glow and clearing up, you've gone too far. Once you have it at the right level, rotate the sphere gently so that the salts clinging to the glass are now over a part of the plasma ring. give it a gentle tap with your fingernail or something else that won't damage or break the glass. I find it also works better once it's warmed up for a couple minutes. Sometimes it'll last 3-7 seconds, but sometimes some salts will get trapped in the magnetic/plasma field and you'll see a reaction for 30+ seconds, with it rotating and spiraling around the ring. It's very impressive in person and hard to capture video of what it really looks like. It takes some experimenting with the level and playing around with the sphere, but it's fun to play around with.
