Waistband very very small

The design is nice and I love that the bottom can button or be left open. The waistband however gives me a muffin top despite me already sizing up. I'm normally a medium, sometimes small in pants, size 27 jeans. Yet a large was too tight and still pushes the sides of my stomach out, which takes away from the sexy look for me. So unfortunate and makes no sense to make a large size that small. And yes I used the size chart for exact measurements but it still turned out off.
